The Sagrada Família is the most visited paid monument in Spain — ahead of the Alhambra, the Prado, and every other landmark in the country. On a summer Saturday, over 10,000 people attempt to visit. The walk-up queue can mean 90 minutes or more standing on the pavement before you even reach the entrance.

Check at unusual hours — early morning (7:00 AM) and late evening (10:00 PM CET) — when new slots occasionally appear. The later in the day you check, the more likely slots have been released for the next morning.
If 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM are sold out, check 2:00–4:00 PM slots. Afternoon slots in summer have good availability more often than morning ones. You miss the morning light, but gain the extraordinary afternoon red-amber light through the west-facing Passion windows — which many visitors prefer for photography.
Weekends — especially Saturdays — sell out furthest in advance. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit in the same week may have slots available when Saturday is fully booked. If your schedule allows any flexibility, a weekday check is always worth doing before concluding that your dates are unavailable.
A small number of tickets are sold at the door, but this is genuinely a last resort. In summer, walk-up visitors can face 2+ hour queues with no guarantee of entry. In winter, walk-up is more viable. If you go this route, arrive before 9:00 AM to join the queue before the daily sold-out point.
If all else fails, the exterior is free and substantial. The Nativity facade (east) and the Passion facade (west) are fully visible from the public street and plaza. You can spend 30–45 minutes examining the sculptural programme in detail without a ticket. It is not the full experience, but it is not nothing — and the Nativity facade alone contains more carved detail than most entire cathedrals.
The honest bottom line on last-minute tickets
In July and August, last-minute morning slots are often genuinely unavailable. The Sagrada Família sells out at peak times because 4.5 million people visit every year and the building can only admit a fixed number per slot. If you're visiting in peak season, booking 2–4 weeks ahead is not excessive — it's realistic planning.
