Nativity Tower vs. Passion Tower

🌅

Nativity Tower (East)

  • Views toward the Mediterranean Sea
  • Morning light is spectacular
  • Richer sculptural decoration on the way up
  • Closer to the Metro exit — slightly easier to access
✝️

Passion Tower (West)

  • Views toward Montjuïc and the city centre
  • Afternoon and evening light is best
  • More modern, stark sculptural style
  • Slightly less crowded on average

What Happens When You Go Up

1

Queue at the tower lift entrance

The tower lift is a separate entrance from the main building entry. For the Nativity towers, look for the lift door on the east side of the building near Plaça de la Sagrada Família. For Passion towers, it is on the west side near Carrer de Sardenya. Queueing here is separate from your main entry scan.

2

Elevator ascent to 65 metres

The elevator is small and fits groups of 5 to 8 people. It ascends directly inside the tower structure. The ride takes about 40 seconds. Bags larger than a small daypack are not permitted and must be left in the lockers at the main entrance.

3

Walk the bridge between towers

At the top, a covered stone bridge connects two towers. Openings in the stone walls frame views over Barcelona. The bridge is narrow (single file in places) and the openings are open to the air, so those nervous of heights should know this before booking.

4

Examine the tower details up close

At this height you can see the mosaic ceramic pinnacles, the "Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus" inscriptions spiralling up the stone, and the structural geometry of the tower walls. These details are invisible from street level. A phone camera with zoom reveals additional layers.

5

Descend via spiral stairs

There is no return elevator. The descent is via a narrow spiral staircase winding through the tower interior. Approximately 300 to 400 steps depending on the tower. The stairs have a central stone column and the width is tight. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the descent at a relaxed pace.

Photography from the Towers

The towers offer some of the best architectural photography positions in Barcelona, but the views are framed rather than panoramic. The stone lattice windows create natural frames for the city below. For the Nativity tower, morning visits (before 10:00) catch the best light for the east-facing views toward the sea. For the Passion tower, late afternoon in summer produces long golden light across the Eixample grid toward Montjuïc.

The most distinctive shots from the towers are downward: looking along the face of the tower itself, you see the mosaic pinnacles below your feet and the construction site of the central towers rising alongside you. On a clear day you can see Tibidabo, the Barceloneta beach, the port, and on exceptional days the mountains behind the city. A wide-angle lens or the ultra-wide mode on a modern smartphone handles the confined spaces well.

Practical Tips Before You Book

⏱️
Allow 45–60 minutes
From joining the tower queue to completing the descent.
🎒
Small bags only
Larger bags must stay in lockers. A slim daypack is fine.
👟
Wear flat shoes
The spiral staircase is uneven stone. Heels are a serious mistake.
📅
Book in advance
Tower slots sell out earlier than general entry, especially in summer.
🌅
Morning for Nativity
Best light and views toward the sea. Slightly cooler in summer.
🌇
Afternoon for Passion
Golden hour across the Eixample grid is worth the wait.

Tower Access FAQs

Click any question to reveal the answer.

Can you go inside the Sagrada Família towers?

Yes. Tower access tickets include an elevator ride up either the Nativity or Passion tower. At the top (around 65 metres), you walk along covered bridges connecting the towers and look out over Barcelona, the sea, and the surrounding Eixample grid. You descend via a spiral staircase that winds through the tower's interior.

Which tower is better: Nativity or Passion?

They offer different views and experiences. The Nativity tower (east) has views toward the Mediterranean Sea and the Eixample neighbourhood. The Passion tower (west) looks toward Montjuïc, the city centre, and Tibidabo. The Nativity tower has richer sculptural decoration en route. Most visitors who've done both say the views are comparable — choose based on which facade you find more interesting.

Is the tower access suitable for children?

Yes, but with caveats. The elevator is small and the covered walkways are narrow with open sides. Young children must be accompanied at all times. Children under 11 typically cannot access the towers (varies by operator). The descent staircase is steep and confined. If your child is nervous of heights, this one may not be for them.

Can I get tickets for both towers?

Standard tower access tickets include one tower (your choice at booking). Some premium packages allow access to both towers. However, visiting both towers takes significant additional time and most visitors find one tower gives them the complete experience they came for.
